Created by William Samari, Ray Yamartino, and Rafaan Anvari, this week’s map graphically shows the leadership positions for each country. Using demographics, survey data, and in some cases relying on simple observations of the obvious, the map illustrates well known facts and reveals many interesting tidbits.
In no particular order, here are some of my favorites. If you want the greatest chance of randomly meeting an Olympic medal winner you should visit Grenada which has the highest number of them per capita. Want to improve your odds of meeting a member of the opposite sex? If you’re a male head to Estonia where there are roughly 100 women for every 84 men. For women you could hit the bar scene near local technical schools. The male to female ratio at my alma mater RPI is ~2 to 1. If techies aren’t your thing, catch a flight to the United Arab Emirates. In the playground of the Middle East you’ll enjoy the attention of 219 men for every 100 women.
Interesting Facts
The number one country for growing coffee is Brazil. Strangely the number one producer of brazil nuts is Columbia. Perhaps that’s what explains the disappearance of Juan Valdez from our television screens. If you’re interested, the number one drinker of coffee (per capita) is Finland. For the would be fossil hunter, Mongolia is the place to go. It leads the world in Velociraptor bones. More the spelunker, then head to Malaysia the leader in caves. If you’re afraid of getting struck by lightning, then by all means avoid Mexico the country with the most lightning strikes.
I think I’ll head to Greenland. I like the idea of “personal space”.
